Marble Care 101

The Beauty of Natural Stone

It goes much deeper beyond the surface.

Nothing compares to the elegance and beauty of natural stone. It delivers both unmatched beauty and practicality making it an investment you will never regret. But once you have it, how do you take care of it?

We want you to know your stone can continue to look as beautiful and like new all the time. With the proper care and maintenance on all your stone surfaces, you can prevent expensive restoration. We offer continued maintenance plans on any basis, whether it be monthly, every 6 months or yearly. We will keep your stone surfaces looking beautiful all the time.

The main reason polished stone floors become dull is that we walk on them and "grind" in dust, sand, and other fine, gritty matter that abrades the finish. Although the scratching is very fine, it eventually covers the whole area so massively that light will no longer reflect of the surface. Therefore, maintenance is a key factor guaranteeing post-installation or post-restoration beauty appearance and longevity. Kellar Marble Care can set up a Professional Maintenance Program to implement a cycle of periodic low-cost restoration procedures.

For in-house maintenance we recommends few simple rules following which the floors, vanities, walls, counter tops etc. will stay in a good condition for a long time:

Do It.

Apply a sealer to protect the longevity of that stone’s surface. This will help in maintaining the beauty of the stone’s appearance without having to do costly restoration. (It will give you that extra time to clean up a spill before it permeates the stone surface.)

Use only trusted products designed for stone maintenance. Kellar Marble Care can recommend a wide variety of reputable products.

If a spill occurs, blot up spill immediately and flush the area with water, mild soap and towel dry.

Use a neutral pH cleaner to clean your stone surfaces. Stone cleaning products should have neutral pH equal or close to 7.

Dust often with a soft terry cloth towel.

Protect floors with area rugs, non-slip mats.

Use dry-mopping as often as you can. Think that scratches come not from walking on the floor as such, but from the sand and grits lying between shoes and polished surfaces.

Keep your floors maintained at a high polished level to prevent a costly restoration.

Keep mops, rags, sponges, dust mops and other supplies to clean the marble separate from other cleaning suppliers. A mop used in a restroom may have acid from toilet bowl cleaners or urine in it. Both can have negative effects on polished stone floors.

Never, Ever Do It.

Don't wash any marble surface with vinegar, glass or furniture cleaner or any acidic based cleaner, i.e. bleach, chlorine, or strong bathroom or grout cleaners. They poison the stone kill the polish and damage surface.

Don't let sand and salt build up on your stone surfaces. They will wear down the finish and cause scratches.

Don't let your floors wear down to an absolute dull, scratchy finish. This will prevent a costly restoration down the road.

Don't use abrasive cleaners.
